AGBU MHS Mock Trial 2019

November 23, 2019

On November 18, 2019, AGBU MHS hosted an award ceremony for their students who participated in The Constitutional Rights Foundation Mock Trial competition. Students were awarded certificates from the AGBU Western District, the Armenian Bar Association, and Manoukian High School. AGBU WD board members Talin Yacoubian and Lucy Varpetian, who was the lead on launching the Mock Trial program at both MHS and MDS, were in attendance and congratulated each participant as they awarded the certificates.

Each year, The Constitutional Rights Foundation creates and produces a new set of Mock Trial materials based on an important issue facing America’s youth.

This year there were 17 participants from AGBU Vatche and Tamar Manoukian High School. The Mock Trial team was coached by the school’s English teacher, Mrs. Anoush Markarian and attorney Ani Papirian. MHS students did an amazing job, received many words of praise and recognition, and advanced through to Round 2. Freshman, Lucine Ekizian and Senior, Allen Amirian both received the coveted “Most Valuable Participant” award this year.  AGBU WD and MHS are extremely proud of all of these students for representing our school so positively.

The Los Angeles Mock Trial Program is an academic competition in which over 2,500 high school and middle school students compete at the county level. Student teams study a hypothetical case, conduct legal research, and receive guidance from volunteer attorneys in courtroom procedures and trial preparation. The trial itself is a simulation of a criminal case, in which students portray lawyers, witnesses, court clerks, and bailiffs, thus acquiring a working knowledge of our judicial system while developing their analytical abilities and communication skills.
